Because of his "philosophical" disagreement with conscription, Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, introduced a bill in the House to eliminate the Selective Service System and the Selective Service Act. If passed, the bill would eliminate the Selective Service System, or SSS, and the law requiring all males to register for the draft on their 18th birthday.

A bill before the House Armed Services Committee would require the induction of young men into the military "to receive basic military training and education for a period of up to one year," according to a summary of the measure.

Universal Military Training and Service Act of 2001 (Introduced in House)
